Hearth & HollisKitchen Studio · Mill Valley

Four hundred and thirty Marin kitchens.

Every one started as somebody's least favourite room. Drag the sliders — and notice that the interesting change is almost never the colour.

Larkspur · 11 weeks

The Bellamy family.

A 1979 kitchen sealed off from the rest of the house by a peninsula three people could not pass. We took the wall to the family room and built white oak cabinetry to the ceiling.

Before: a dated 1979 kitchen with tiled backsplash and a closed peninsula An open-plan family kitchen with an island and ceiling-height cabinetry BeforeAfter

Wall opened to family room · White oak inset cabinetry · Honed quartz · Two working parents, three children

Tiburon · 9 weeks

The Ashworth family.

Heavy timber and granite that made a bright hillside house feel like a basement. The plan was sound, so this one is a renovation — everything you touch changed, nothing you walk around did.

Before: dark wooden cabinetry and granite counters in a closed layout A bright family kitchen with natural light across the worktops BeforeAfter

Same footprint · Inset shaker in Farrow & Ball Slipper Satin · Farmhouse sink · Aged brass

Sightlines from the range to the sofa, so nobody cooks alone any more.

In their words

"We cooked at home every night except two."

The Bellamys filmed this six months after moving back into their kitchen. Nobody from our studio was in the room.
