The kitchen your family grows up in.

For nineteen years Marin families have handed us the busiest room in the house. We design around your Tuesday evenings — homework at the island, two cooks, a dog underfoot — not around a showroom.

We know the real fear

It isn't the money. It's the six months of chaos.

Every family we meet asks the same question three different ways: what happens to us while this is going on? Nobody wants a beautiful kitchen badly enough to lose half a year of normal life for it.

01

Nowhere to feed anyone

Six weeks of takeout on the coffee table. It gets old by day four, and it quietly costs more than most families expect.

02

Strangers, unannounced

A different crew every morning, nobody who can answer a question, and no one who tells you when it will be quiet again.

03

The timeline that slides

"Another two weeks" repeated until the holidays arrive and the island is still wrapped in plastic sheeting.

04

Storage that still doesn't fit

A brand-new kitchen with the same countertop clutter, because nobody ever asked what you actually own.

05

A room designed for photos

Beautiful, and faintly hostile to real life. Nowhere to drop a schoolbag, nowhere for two people to work at once.

06

Decisions made under pressure

Choosing tile in a showroom on a Saturday with a deadline is how families end up with a kitchen nobody chose.

Our promise to your family

The Kitchen-in-Use Promise.

Before a single cabinet comes out, we build you a temporary kitchen — a working sink, your refrigerator, a microwave and counter space, in whatever room suits your house. It stays until the new kitchen is genuinely usable.

It is written into every contract, it costs you nothing extra, and in nineteen years we have never once skipped it. Four hundred and thirty families have cooked dinner at home through their own remodel.

  • Working sink and refrigerator, from day one
  • Dust walls sealed before demolition, not after
  • One project lead you can text by name
  • A written weekly schedule on your fridge

The transformation

The Bellamy family.
Larkspur, eleven weeks.

A 1979 kitchen closed off from everything, with a peninsula that three people could not pass. We opened the wall to the family room, built white oak cabinetry to the ceiling, and gave two working parents a proper island. Drag to see it.

No two are alike, because no two households cook alike. These are a few from the last two years.

How it goes

Five steps, and you always know which one you're in.

Nobody enjoys not knowing what happens next. So we tell you, in writing, before anything starts.

1

An evening at your table

Ninety minutes in your kitchen around dinner time, on purpose. We watch where the bottleneck is, where homework lands, who reaches over whom. Free, and you keep the written range we leave behind.

2

Design you can walk through

Full plans plus a 3D walkthrough you can send to your mother. We revise until it is right — there is no revision limit, because a kitchen you half-like is a bad outcome for both of us.

3

Selections, in one afternoon

Cabinetry, stone, tile, hardware and paint chosen together at the studio with everything laid out at once. No Saturday showroom marathons, no decisions made under pressure.

4

Build — with your kitchen still working

Temporary kitchen in, dust walls sealed, weekly written schedule on the fridge. One project lead, reachable by text, who is on your site every day.

5

The first dinner

We clean, style and photograph the room, then leave. Punch list closed within ten days, and we call at six months and again at two years to check how it is actually living.

Marin families

The part we're proudest of.

We ask every family the same thing a year later: is it still working for you?

"We cooked dinner at home every night except two. I still tell people that and they don't believe me."

They asked what time my kids get home from school before they asked about my budget. That's when I knew.

Eleven weeks, exactly as written. The schedule on the fridge never changed once. I've never had a trade do that.

Two years in and there is still not one thing I'd change. My sister has redone hers twice in that time.

The storage plan was the whole thing. Everything I own has a home now, and the counters just stay clear.

The studio

We are a family business that builds kitchens for families.

Hearth & Hollis began in 2007 when Ana Hollis, a cabinetmaker, and her brother-in-law Sam Hearth, a contractor, got tired of watching Marin families endure remodels that treated them as an obstacle.

Nineteen years later the shop is still on Miller Avenue, Ana still signs off on every cabinet drawing, and we still cap the calendar so no family ever competes for attention. Our crew has been together an average of nine years — the person who tiles your backsplash has tiled four hundred before it.

Financing

So the budget conversation happens once, early, and kindly.

The worst version of this is finding out in week nine that the island has to go. We would rather know your number on day one and design something you can genuinely afford to love.

Questions

Everything families ask us first.

Real numbers, real timelines. If we don't know, we say so.

How much does a kitchen remodel cost in Marin County?

Most Marin County kitchen remodels land between $65,000 and $180,000. A refresh keeping the existing layout usually runs $65,000–$95,000, while opening the kitchen to a family room and rebuilding storage runs $110,000–$180,000. We give every family a written range at the first visit, free.

Can we live at home during a kitchen remodel?

Yes, and almost every family does. Our Kitchen-in-Use Promise means you keep a working sink, your refrigerator and a microwave in a temporary kitchen from day one until the new room is ready. We set it up before demolition, at no extra cost.

How long does a kitchen remodel take?

Four to six months from first sketch to finished room — five to eight weeks of design and selections, eight to twelve weeks building cabinetry, six to ten weeks on site. You get a written weekly schedule so you always know who is in your house and when.

Do you help with the design, or do we need our own designer?

Design is included. Every project starts with a designer who spends an evening watching how your family actually uses the kitchen — where homework happens, where the dog bowl lives, who cooks together. You are also welcome to bring your own designer; we work alongside them happily.

Do you offer financing for kitchen remodeling?

Yes — 0% APR for 12 months on approved credit, and fixed terms up to 120 months. Checking your rate takes about three minutes and uses a soft credit pull, so it does not affect your credit score. See financing →

Which areas of Marin do you serve?

We work throughout Mill Valley, Tiburon, Belvedere, Larkspur, Corte Madera, Sausalito, Ross, Kentfield and San Rafael. Our studio is on Miller Avenue in Mill Valley, so most projects sit within fifteen minutes of the shop. See service areas →

Come and sit at your own table with us

Let's design the room where the next ten years happen.

Ninety minutes, in your kitchen, around dinner time. It costs nothing, you keep the written range, and there is no follow-up visit unless you ask for one.
